My peers find this shocking, but I turn down potential clients all the time.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s difficult to pass up on any revenue when growing a business.

For me, a Maya Angelou quote helps make these tough decisions:
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

Yesterday, I turned down a potential attorney client because we did not see eye-to-eye on how a financial planning engagement should be.

He wanted it to be a quick transaction, but I know from experience that’s not in his best interest – so I turned the opportunity down.

To be truly successful, you must like HOW you do business.

If it’s not in the client’s best interest, do the right thing even if it costs you in the short-run.

That’s how you build something of lasting value!
