Here are a few “rules of thumb” to follow when trying to determine whether to file your taxes separately while paying off student loans:

– If only the breadwinner spouse has student loans, it’s not as favorable to file your taxes separately.

– If both spouses have loans eligible for forgiveness, then it’s not as favorable to file separately.

– If you live in a community property state (i.e. Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin), it’s more favorable to file taxes separately.
